so I usually make videos about maps and international stuff but as you all can see lately i've been diving into all sorts of different topics (NFTs, icecream makers, shampoo). The reality is that I make my videos based on what is genuinely fascinating me at any moment. I'm glad you are all here along with me on this wild ride of trying to understand how things work. lots more stuff to come! -Johnny

Hi I just got to see this video and I doubt you will see this comment, but I wanted to know. Do you use any hair products? In the video you cut out the shampoo, but do you still use pomade and hair conditioner and finally most important Do you use soap, to clean your head and scalp or strictly water?
NecrochildK 15 hours ago
I was wondering if you simply don't use shampoo or anything or if you use something else instead as you don't mention any specifics. The no poo method I learned about nine years ago is making a paste from baking soda with a little water and using that in place of shampoo, then after rinsing it out, you dilute a little bit of vinegar in a cup of water and rinse it through your hair to balance the ph back out. My scalp used to scab and my hairline was always cracked and raw before I started using this no poo method. It took less than a month of the baking soda wash for my scalp to heal. I have very dry skin overall, so I can never be fully free of flakes, but it was drastically reduced. I used to be able to shake my hair up and just snow everywhere, anymore, I just get a few flakes on my shoulders over the course of the day. After that, my husband switched too and despite having very oily hair, his hair evened out a lot and like mine got a lot softer and healthier looking.

I never use soap on my face:except if I did mechanics or some dirty jobs. (Ok.. I wash my beard with soap because..food!) I take at least a shower a day btw. I don't have any pimples. My skin is in good condition.(no wrinkles..any use of skin care products) So yeah: maybe we don't need so much products to be healthy and clean!

I have no clue how you comprehend how profit-driven, psychologically manipulative and exploitative big companies are and then go ahead and put out a take “actually the world economic forum really cares about people and is striving to create a ‘stakeholder’ capitalism where massive corporations pinky-promise they will stop caring about their bottom line - profits” Like you are at the same time incredibly lucid but amazingly gullible. I hope you put two and two together one day.

Depends on your hair type and maybe hair length and scalp type. I've tried ditching shampoo for weeks or months at a time several times over twenty years or more. Also tried just shampoo but not conditioner. I've had long hair most of that time. Shaved or really short was fine with just soap/shower gel/nothing, but once it got longer it would just get oily and skanky after one or two weeks. With shampoo and no conditioner it would turn to straw first and then get oily and skanky. Anti-dandruff shampoo definitely gave me worse dandruff. Now I shampoo once every week or two when it starts to feel yuck, but if I don't condition I'll have to shampoo again sooner. But hey haven't got that much hair these days even though it's still long (-:

For a long time I was washing my hair with bicarbonate of soda. Once a week. And my dry hair needed just once a week to be washed. But then I understood that it's drying my hair to much and I got to back to the shampoo. And I need to use it now several times a week. Also I had the experience with rye flour. It's washes very good my hair. Think now I need to go back to it. Thank you for your video!!! BTW, with rye flour you don't need the conditioner at all.

I think that maybe it's because you has straight hair... and actually washing your hair 5 days in the week is actually pretty insane, you has to do it like 1 or 2 times per week. More than that is dangerous. I will try not shampooing my hair too, but I believe it will not work since I have curly hair and we, curly people, has to use more heavy products to style the hair.

Not a lot of science referenced in this video. I will take this video with a grain of salt until I find out otherwise by evidence based science

Love what you do Johnny. But this time I think you dropped the ball. You've got a head of hair like a Siberian Husky: thick, plentiful, no balding, full hairline....you can do anything you darn well please with it and style it 100 different ways and still have it come out handsomely. What about the majority of us guys who wake up with serious bed-head, who need to shampoo it just to get it to lay down and have any hope of styling? What about we who are balding, thinning, have fine hair, greying (and texture changing), etc.? It's like those guys in men's magazines with perfect bodies, lean muscles, large packages, no stomachs, long waists, perfect ages, consistent beards, and yes, perfect hair...all telling us normal guys the torture we ought to go through to try to look, eat, and be like them. So next time you want to do something special, please look in the mirror and realize that you look pretty damned perfect to the rest of us. You lose credibility when you use yourself as an example (I suspect you're pretty close to those guys in the mags, unless you can find something that is objectively wrong with you.) You do a great job tackling other subjects, so keep it up.

Thanks for not getting preachy and for being balanced about what you say, but it would be nice to hear what it is you do when you step into the shower. I mean your hair gets wet, and then what? You rinse it out only with water? You wear a shower cap to keep it dry? Do you towel it off, use a hair dryer, or let it air dry? From the looks of it, you use product in your hair even now, yes? I mean it’s perfectly coiffed…

I have been a hairstylist for over 15 years and can confirm what you are saying is true. I haven't washed my hair in over seven years - I only scrub it with water in the shower. If you quit shampoo, you will go through a period where your hair is oily, but after a few weeks, your oil production will settle and you will no longer have oily hair. The whole haircare industry is a joke.

The water-only method is life-changing! I've been simply rinsing my hair (thoroughly) with warm/hot water for the past 4-5 months! If I rinse it every day, my roots do not look "dirty"/greasy and my scalp no longer gets dry! My hair overall just looks glossy and feels super soft - about as sleek and soft as when I used to use hair oil by Ouai!! This past winter I wanted to find completely natural hair products online, and then in the process wondered if just rinsing with water would do the job. I googled it and saw there's a whole "movement" called the "water-only" method! It's pretty self explanatory but some people made a few suggestions about what to do in addition to the rinsing. Someone online recommended "preening" (or something like that), where you massage your scalp, and then pinch a strand of your hair at the roots and slide down the whole strand to spread out the oil. I did this "preening" a couple times but don't think it's very necessary, and I don't remember how often the blogger recommended to do so. I think rinsing my hair and brushing it out spreads the oil enough. I noticed you can also just hold the body and ends of your hair in your hands throughout the day to make it more oily, if it starts to look frizzy or if you just want to make it glossier 👍🏼 As for me, I just rinse my hair thoroughly, dry my hair in a soft shirt for a couple minutes [while washing my face with African black soap (a wonderful, natural product!)], scrunch it slightly to bring out my natural waves, air dry it the rest of the way, brush my hair when it's pretty much dry (I want to start experimenting to determine what type of brush would spread oil out the best), and pat water all over it in the morning if it looks frizzy! Magnifique! I've been wanting to tell poeple about the water only method, because it's definitely cheap and very effective! I just haven't wanted to comment on hair ads on social media so as to avoid angering major hair companies, lol :). But people should know about this!! We've been manipulated! lol
